People of all ages – from the very young to the very old – can derive benefit from Buteyko training. Children grasp the principles very quickly, and although very small children do not have the discipline to do the exercises, they can still achieve  better asthma control by such simple steps as keeping their mouth closed. At the other end of the age spectrum, people who have suffered from lifelong asthma can experience a dramatic turnaround in their condition.

Buteyko also improves exercise tolerance in both children and adults: a study demonstrates that a five-week course of Buteyko Breathing Therapy reduces hyperventilation-induced breathlessness after exercise (Austin et al., 2009) – hence, by teaching people to reduce the rate and depth of their breathing both during and after physical activity, BBT may reduce their asthma symptoms and allow them to enjoy the benefits of exercise.
