• Encourage breathing through the nose rather than the mouth, and from the diaphragm rather than the upper chest (i.e. ‘abdominal breathing’). 

  • Advise regular use of a breathing exercise routine lasting 20 to 25 minutes two or three times a day in the initial period. (This commitment can be reduced as the patient’s condition improves.) 

  • Suggest ways of encouraging nasal breathing during sleep. 

  • Gradually increase amount of physical exercise accompanied by breath control. 

  • Pay attention to diet as necessary.
